The OFA’s role is to provide rigorous analysis of the policy implications arising from research on ageing issues and to undertake projects that have a strategic whole-of-government focus. The OFA particularly focuses on areas without specific agency ownership, such as social marginalisation, abuse of older people, and workforce issues. The emphasis is on areas where public policy responses are required to address current or emerging social justice issues.

Key external stakeholders include older people, other government agencies who may seek advice on ageing issues and who deliver services or programs that impact on older people, the peak non-government bodies, major service providers, and the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Ageing (MACA).
