Spastic Centre opens in Dubbo

Release Date: 6 June 2008

Today will mark the official opening of the Spastic Centre’s new Sargent’s Kids Quarters in Dubbo.

NSW Minister for Ageing and Disability Services, Kristina Keneally, and Member for Dubbo, Dawn Fardell, will join CEO of the Spastic Centre, Rob White to officially open the new building.

"The Spastic Centre receives over $178,000 in funding from the Iemma Government to provide a number of much-needed local services in the Orana Far West area," Ms Keneally said.

"They provide invaluable therapy and flexible respite services to children with disabilities and their families and help them identify goals and aspirations, feel confident about the choices they make and help them better participate in their communities.

"Approximately 55 children from the Orana Far West area receive services from the Spastic Centre every year and I am pleased that in partnership with the Iemma Government and through Stronger Together, our $1.3 billion plan for disability services, these services can be enhanced."

Ms Keneally said that the new premises for the Spastic Centre will also be home to the team who provide much needed ‘outreach’ support services to people with a disability, their carers and families living in rural and remote areas.

"The new premises are a perfect base for the Outreach team to see clients locally and to plan and prepare for the regular outreach trips to areas like Gilgandra, Lightning Ridge, Brewarrina, Mudgee and Cobar," Ms Keneally said.

Ms Keneally said that the new building contains two therapy rooms, one large room suitable for consultations, presentations and meetings, an accessible bathroom and plenty of room to run demonstrations of equipment to families.

"I am so pleased that the Spastic Centre now has extra space to enable them to run group style services for more than one child at a time, a service which they couldn’t offer to families before," Ms Keneally said.
