$120,000 Donation to kick off Rd Cross campaign World Red Cross Day: 8 May

Release Date: 8 May 2008

The Iemma Government today donated $120,000 to the Red Cross Calling campaign, recognising the great work the Red Cross does throughout New South Wales and Australia.

NSW Minister for Ageing and Disability Services, Kristina Keneally, made the presentation of a cheque this afternoon at a World Red Cross Day Award Ceremony in Sydney.

"Today marks World Red Cross Day, and there is no more appropriate time to give the Red Cross a hand in meeting their target of $9 million in donations for this year," Ms Keneally said.

"The $120,000 is a great start to the Red Cross Calling Campaign, which will see an incredible 40,000 volunteers out door knocking for donations throughout this year.

"We all know that the Red Cross does fantastic work across the world – a fact that was made all the more clear in January 2008, with the Red Cross response to the Northern New South Wales flood emergency.

"Red Cross Volunteer teams worked with the NSW Department of Community Services and other non-government organisations to establish four evacuation centres and provide support to flood affected residents.

"I also pay particular tribute to the Telecross campaign, a daily phone contact service to people who are at risk of social isolation – a great service for those individuals and a great way that people can participate in the community. "

Ms Keneally encouraged people to get on board and help the Red Cross.

"I’d encourage everyone to get involved with the Red Cross Calling Campaign - helping them to meet their donations target will help a lot of people who need a bit of a hand.
