New and improved housing for people with a disability

Release Date: 4 January 2008

NSW Minister for Disability Services Kristina Keneally today announced that a contract has been awarded for the redevelopment of Grosvenor Centre at Summer Hill.

Ms Keneally said that the contract had been awarded to Stephen Edwards Constructions Pty. Ltd.

“Construction is set to begin early this year it is expected that the redeveloped facility will be open before Christmas 2008,” Ms Keneally said.

“This new $7.7 million facility will provide modern accommodation for 20 people with a disability in two specially designed 10 bed houses,” Ms Keneally said.

“We will also provide 10 respite places in two five bed houses for people with complex health care needs.”

Ms Keneally said that the specially designed facility would provide secure long term accommodation for all of the current residents of the Grosvenor Centre.

“This redevelopment will allow us to provide modern accommodation for people with complex healthcare needs in a community setting.

“By using a more efficient design at the existing site we can make the transition for residents as seamless as possible.”

Ms Keneally said that this redevelopment confirms the Iemma Government’s commitment to develop innovative services for people with a disability, their families and carers.

“Supported environments like these make it easier for people to access the services they need to allow them to participate in the community.

Ms Keneally said that the new Grosvenor Centre would complement the 10-bed respite facility opened early in 2007 on the site of the former Mannix centre at Liverpool.

“Both projects are part of a long-term strategy to develop flexible accommodation solutions, as outlined in Stronger Together, the NSW Government’s 10-year plan for disability services.”
