Release Date: 5 December 2007

The challenges facing students with a disability will be better understood following the launch of a DVD by the Minister for Minister for Disability Services, Kristina Keneally today.

Ms Keneally said there are more than 33,000 students with a disability in NSW government schools and they comprise more than 10% of enrolments in TAFE NSW.

“The Critical Bridges: Meeting Challenges at Points of Transition in Education by Working Together DVD will be an invaluable resource for young people with a disability,” Ms Keneally said.

“It will assist teachers, trainers and employers to better understand the needs of students with disabilities.

“Whether it’s making the transition from home to school, to Year 7, going on to Year 12 or into vocational education and training – all students deserve the best we have to offer.

The DVD was produced by the NSW Department of Education and Training’s Disability Programs Directorate, the Disability Council of NSW and the TAFE NSW Disability Unit.

Ms Keneally said the DVD focuses on the role played by State education services at three critical points of transition for students with disabilities and their families:

• Pre-school to school,

• School to post-school, and

• Acquiring a disability in adult years.

“The NSW Department of Education and Training is a leader in providing education and vocational education and training for people with a disability,” Ms Keneally said.

“Our schools provide the necessary supports for education and training programs and equipment to ensure students can complete their education and training in schools, colleges and workplaces.

“Given workforce participation rates for people with a disability is 30 percent lower than the general population, it is vital they are provided with the extra support they need sothey can reach their full potential and participate fully in their communities,” she added.
